This is the gesture corresponding to geresh ("expulsion"), as reconstructed
by me. The written sign is the mirror image of tifha, and has a related musical meaning. Just as tifha represents the third degree
of the basic modal scale, so geresh represents
a major or minor third interval above
the sustained degree represented by the right hand. Thus, in the photo on the left, the left hand produces a gesture
representing silluq or E, while the right
hand produces a gesture representing geresh:
a rise on one syllable to G or G# (depending on the musical mode being used). The effect of this appogiatura is indeed one of expulsion; when the hand returns to its "rest position", the hand figuratively "seizes the word to the rear". |
