Gershayim ("double expulsion") is simply
a double appogiatura to the major or minor
third above the sustained degree. The hand produces the gesture for geresh, then returns to the rest position (signifying the return to the sustained degree and thus
"seizing the word to the rear"),
then produces the gesture for geresh again
before finally returning to the rest position. The melodic motif represented by the combination of gestures on
the left would thus be G-E-G (or G#-E-G#, depending on the mode). |
