Here is the gesture corresponding to zaqef qaton ("small rising"), as described by the Manuel
du Lecteur and in light of what the form of the written sign itself suggests.
(In forming the gesture, one does tend to make a slight downward motion from the rest position.) It represents
an appogiatura of a major or minor second
downward from the sustained degree. Though the gesture and the melodic motif it represents both descend, the melodic
effect is to make the word "stand
out" from its context -- hence the name. |
