Here is the gesture corresponding to zarqa ("spurt"), which is described by the Manuel du Lecteur. (The written sign as found in many manuscripts and printed editions corresponds very closely to the form of the gesture as illustrated above.) "Snatching [the word] with a single finger" is an apt way of describing the gesture. One finger descends, then ascends and finally resolves to the rest position (thus signifying a descent of a major or minor second, then an ascent of a major or minor third, and finally a resolution on the sustained degree).
