THE GOSPEL OF JOHN (SOUNDTRACK)
Varese Sarabande 302 066 530 2

This CD is the soundtrack to the feature film, itself available as DVD and VHS cassette from the same producer: Visual Bible International. Besides the modern orchestral instruments of The Philharmonia Orchestra, London, the soundtrack features a good many ancient and early musical instruments (extant, replicated or reconstructed) which are meant to evoke the music of Jesus' day. (The Roman instruments are performed by members of Praecones Britanniae ("Heralds of the British Province"), an early music group based in the U.K.)
The original film also features excerpts of Esther Lamandier's performances of biblical Hebrew chant (as reconstructed by Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura) and Aramaic Christian chant, plus a sample of Psalm 121 as performed by men's voices on Volume 3 of Haïk-Vantoura's recordings. This soundtrack includes only brief excerpts of Mme. Lamandier's performances: the Priestly Blessing in Hebrew (in Tracks 4 and 18) and some Aramaic excerpts (including something that seems to have been especially composed for the film: Track 10, "The Prayer"). The soundtrack overall is exquisite, if (at least to this author) rather repetitive in comparison to the film's actual soundtrack. Considering the variety of subject matter that composer Jeff Danna covers, this is rather surprising. For our purposes, however, we should note the skill with which Mr. Danna uses the biblical material (especially the Priestly Blessing) as inspiration for his own compositional themes.
