ATRIUM MUSICAE DE MADRID: MUSIQUE DE LA GRÈCE ANTIQUE
Harmonia Mundi CD HMA 1951015 (formerly HMA 1901015)

This CD is based on the original LP by
Atrium Musicae de Madrid, under the direction of Gregorio Paniagua. It contains arrangements of all the then-known surviving works from ancient Greece, including some which are considered apocryphal by some musicologists. The recording uses reconstructions of an amazing variety of period instruments (string, wind, and percussion). Because of the fragmentary nature of many of the texts, the performers have had to treat the material in different ways: sometimes by "patching" it, sometimes simply by playing the "shards" interspersed with silence, drum beats, improvised notes or even dissonant noises. Included is the one tiny fragment that survives of ancient Roman music: one verse from a poem by Terencio.

Originally the LP had very extensive and helpful liner notes which are almost entirely lacking with the CD. Years ago, I reproduced most of those notes in printed form, and they may be viewed at my photo galleries here. If you wish to read or download an updated .pdf copy of these notes, you may do so via this link. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (made freely available here) to read this file (689KB).

The recent re-release of the CD (under a different catalog number) has a slightly different cover than the older release shown here. In the U.S., it is obtainable via
Harmonia Mundi USA or through many record stores and some online book and record sellers (including here at Amazon.com). In France, it is obtainable via Harmonia Mundi France. (See the Harmonia Mundi Home Page for availability in other countries.)

This is the new packaging (obverse) of the Atrium Musicae de Madrid recording (HMA 1951015), as found at the following location at Amazon.com. It is listed there as Music from Ancient Greece.

This recording, Ces musiques du fond des ages, was released in celebration of Harmonia Mundi France's 40th anniversary. It included La musique de la Bible révélée, Musique de la Grèce antique, and a third recording of early church music, Alleluias et offeratories des Gaules. Apparently it is no longer available.
