The Meitzlers: 2nd Generation

John Conrad Meitzler was the son of John and Eliza Meitzler. John Conrad married Maria A. Angelback on April 23, 1867. The couple had no recorded children, and no photos of John Conrad or Maria are presently known.

Before John Conrad's marriage, however, he played a bit part in a much larger drama: the Civil War (War Between The States). Documents detailing some of John Conrad's experiences have survived and are reproduced on this page.

As the photocopy on the left shows, John (Conrad) Meitzler was a private in the 5th Company, Battalion Washington Artillery, Louisiana (Confederate). The signature at the top of the document is apparently John Conrad's own.

These Company Muster Rolls date to September and October,1862 (left) and January and February, 1863 (right). John (Conrad) Meitzler's signature is on the top of each. His date of enlistment is given as "March 9, 186-". A "Maj. Clark" enlisted him, but apparently neglected to put down the year of enlistment. Since Louisiana seceded from the Union on January 26, 1861, and since the Confederacy had formed by February 9 (well before war formally began on April 12), it is likely that John Conrad enlisted in this Confederate Company in 1861, not1862.

These rolls date after the time John Conrad was captured by the Union Army and returned in a prisoner exchange (see below). Note that in the section "Last Paid", there are no entries in these rolls.

This excerpt from a book confirms that John Conrad enlisted on "March 9, 186-". At some point he was captured and brought to Cairo, IL., then brought to Vicksburg, MS. as part of a prisoner exchange. After the war, he lived in New Orleans, LA.
