This online text is designed to be used in conjunction with the recording Cantique des cantiques de Salomon dans sa mélodie d'origine (Alienor CD: AL 1045), produced by Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura. We have included in this e-text links to the musical score of the same title (originally co-published by Editions Choudens and Fondation Roi David, Paris) and MIDI arrangements of certain portions of the score. No copyright infringement is intended by these citations, and the author intends no financial gain through their republication here.

Haïk-Vantoura's deciphering key of the biblical musical accents (
te`amim), and the melodies which result from the key (as applied to the Letteris Edition of the Hebrew Bible), are her own property and are protected by international copyright law. Interested readers may purchase the various published works by Haïk-Vantoura and others, listed on the final pages of this volume.

Naturally, the exegetical deductions made in this book are my own, however much based on Haïk-Vantoura's musical work. While I believe my conclusions are those implied by the music (in the light of the rest of Scripture and the historical context as I understand it), my conclusions should not be construed to be those of the late Haïk-Vantoura, unless I state so specifically.

The biblical books are generally misunderstood to the degree that their message lies in how the book says what it says, or in their background and context, rather than their overt verbal text. Yet the spiritual messages such "complex" books give us, once understood, are profoundly simple (and simply profound). Perhaps that says more about our own spiritual blindness as humans than about the alleged inaccessibility of God or the Bible.

In this volume, I seek to make the long-lost message of the Song of Songs clear, through its rediscovered music (but also through an overview of the verbal and other contexts). I hope that the wealth of technical detail I give here will not blind the reader to the Song's simple, yet profound message: the relationship between human, marital love and the love between God and His people throughout the ages.
